Food & Product Photography
Food photography Geelong
Food and product photography for websites, social media, editorial and promotional material is something we've been doing for clients for many years.
We take food styling very seriously and love working with chefs, bloggers and enthusiasts to get that 'look' that makes a dish jump off the plate. We take great pride in making your dish the hero of the shoot, taking great care to make sure it doesn't blend in with the background. We always use natural light when doing a food shoot. The reason for this is that food under artificial light, particularly white foods such as rice can appear as an unsightly yellow that really takes away from the product. Vibrancy with the amount of different colours in a dish is an essential part of getting it right. Overcast conditions are perfect for a food shoot but if its sunny, we use diffusers to soften the natural light.
The background for food photography is essential. After assessing the appearance of the dish and what it's plated on or served in, we decide what's ideal to use as a background. As a rule, the 3 types of background we use are dark, light or natural. Natural backgrounds such as wood are suited well to all types of food while dark backgrounds generally work well with darker foods and light backgrounds generally work well with lighter foods. The key then becomes the dish or bowl that the food is served in to highlight the product you are displaying. We are stocked with a number of background options such as calico, boards of varying colours and sheet from white to black. We'll bring them with us as to try plus we'll have a look at what you have that may work such as baking dishes, walls or bench tops.
Generally, shooting from directly above produces the best results when photographing food as it gives you the opportunity to show off all the elements and colour profiles of your dish whilst allowing you to position everything with purpose. There are exceptions to this, such as when photographing beverages from side on, where backgrounds such as walls or back drops are ideal. Shooting from an angle can really help highlight the dish as it gives us an opportunity to use depth and blur the back and fore ground while focusing in on the subject.
Product Photography Geelong
As with food photography, many of the same principals apply. We always use a tripod to assist with stability and to minimise the blur effect that can be caused from hand held photography. Because you are taking photos of a product that is static, your camera needs to be as still as it can be. Best achieved through the use of a tripod.
The importance of understanding what you are photographing and where these product photos will appear, assists greatly when making decisions around such things as light and location. The general rule is that products that are generally used indoors such as kitchenware, electrical products and furniture are best shot in an artificial light. While natural products and foods are best shot under a natural light.
We take photos for bloggers, social posts, ecommerce, websites, editorials, websites and hard copy productions and provide them to you in the specification required.
